New criteria for stability of neutral differential equations with variable delays by fixed points method

Abstract
The linear neutral differential equation with variable delays is considered in this article. New criteria for asymptotic stability of the zero solution are established using the fixed point method and the differential inequality techniques. By employing an auxiliary function on the contraction condition, the results of this article extend and improve previously known results. The method used in this article can also be used for studying the decay rates of the solutions.
1 Introduction
The objective of this article is to investigate the stability of the zero solution of the first-order linear neutral differential equations with variable delays
and it's generalized form
by fixed point method under assumptions: a, b, c, b j , c j ∈ C (R +, R), τ, τ j ∈ C (R +, R +), t - τ (t) → ∞ and t - τ j (t) → ∞ as t → ∞.
Recently, Burton and others [1–10] applied fixed point theory to study stability. It has been shown that many of problems encountered in the study of stability by means of the Lyapunov's direct method can be solved by means of the fixed point theory. Then, together with Sakthivel and Luo [11, 12] investigate the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear impulsive stochastic differential equations and the impulsive stochastic partial differential equations with infinite delays by means of the fixed point theory. On the other hand, Luo [13, 14] firstly considers the exponential stability for stochastic partial differential equations with delays by the fixed point method. Zhou and Zhong [15] study the exponential p-stability of neutral stochastic differential equations with multiple delays. Pinto and Seplveda [16] talk about H-asymptotic stability by the fixed point method in neutral nonlinear differential equations with delay. By the same method, Equation 1 and its generalization have been investigated by many authors. For example, Raffoul [17] and Jin and Luo [18] have studied the equation

Ardjouni and Djoudi [19] study the generalized linear neutral differential equation of the form

Obviously, Theorem B improves Theorem A. Theorem C extends Theorem B. Without the loss of generality, we denote . The contraction conditions (3), (4) and (5) imply for some constant α ∈ (0, 1), and hence Theorems A, B, and C will be all invalid if does not hold. In this article, we first give some criteria for asymptotic stability by fixed points method that can be applied to neutral equation which does not satisfy the constraint . Furthermore, the method used in this article can also be used to study the decay rates of the solutions which has not been studied using the fixed point theory to the best of our knowledge except that the exponential stability has been discussed by Luo [13, 14] and Zhou and Zhong [15].
This article is organized as follows: Section 2 includes some notations and definitions. In Section 3, the linear delay differential equations and its generalization are discussed by using the fixed points method. Sufficient conditions for asymptotical stability are presented. In Section 4, we present two examples to show applications of some obtained results. The last Section is the conclusion.
2 Preliminary notes
Let R = (-∞, +∞), R + = [0, +∞) and Z + = 1, 2, 3, . . . and C(S 1, S 2) denote the set of all continuous functions φ : S 1 → S 2. N, M ∈ Z +. For each σ ∈ R +, define m(σ) = inf{s - τ(s): s ≥ σ}, m j (σ) = inf{s - τ j (s): s ≥ σ}, and C(σ) = C([m(σ), σ], R) with the supremum norm ||ψ || = max {|ψ(s)|: m(σ) ≤ s ≤ σ}. For each (σ, ψ ) ∈ R + × C([m(σ),σ], R), a solution of (1) through (σ, ψ ) is a continuous function x : [m(σ), σ + a) → R n for some positive constant a > 0 such that x satisfies (1) on [σ, σ + a) and x = ψ on [m(σ), σ]. We denote such a solution by x(t) = x(t, σ, ψ ). For each (σ, ψ ) ∈ R + × C([m(σ), σ], R), there exists a unique solution x(t) = x(t, σ, ψ ) of (1) defined on [σ, ∞). Similarly, the solution of (2) can be defined.
Next, we state some definitions of the stability.
Definition 2.1. For any ψ C(σ). The zero solution of (1) is said to be

asymptotically stable, if x (t, σ, ψ ) is stable and for any ε > 0 and σ ≥ 0, there exists a δ = δ (ε, σ) > 0 such that ψ ∈ C (σ) and ||ψ || < δ implies .
Definition 2.2. Assume that λ (t) → ∞ as t → ∞ and satisfies λ(t + s) ≤ λ (t) λ (s) for t, s ∈ R + largely enough. Then for any ψ ∈ C (σ), the zero solution of (1) is said to be λ-stable if for some constant γ> 0.
Remark 1. In Definition 2.2,

3. Main results
In this section, sufficient conditions for stability are presented by the fixed point theory. We first give some results on stability of the zero solution of Equation 1. Then, we generalized the results of the stability to Equation 2.
Consider the first-order delay neutral differential equation of the form
Now, we state our main result in the following.
Theorem 3.1. Let τ (t) be twice differentiable and τ' (t) ≠ 1 for all t ∈ [m (σ), ∞). Suppose that

Next, we prove Qφ ∈ S. Let be small and φ ∈ S, then there are constants δ, L > 0 such that || ψ|| < δ and ||φ|| < L. From assumption (6), we get
where . Since implies K (σ) < ∞, then we get that Qφ is bounded. It is clear that Qφ is continuous. We now prove that Qφ (t) → 0 as t → ∞. Obviously I i (t) → 0 for i = 1, 2, 3 since , t - τ (t) → ∞ and φ (t) → 0 as t → ∞. Next, we prove that I 4 (t) → 0 as t → ∞. For t - τ (t) → ∞ and φ (t) → 0, we get that for any ε > 0, there is a positive number T 1 > 0, such that φ (t - τ (t)) < ε for all t ≥ T 1. Then
as t is large enough. Similarly, we can prove that I i (t) → 0 for i = 5. So we get that |(Qφ) (t)| → 0 as t → ∞ and hence Qφ ∈ S. Now, it remains to show that Q is a contraction mapping.

Therefore, Q is a contraction mapping with contraction constant α < 1. By the contraction mapping principle, Q has a unique fixed point z in S which is a solution of (8) with z(t) = ψ (t) on [m(σ), σ] and z(t) = z(t, σ, ψ ) is bounded and tends to zero as t → ∞. To obtain asymptotic stability, we need to show that the zero solution of (8) is stable. Let ε > 0 be given and choose δ > 0 such that δ < ε and 2δK (σ) + αε < ε. If z(t) = z(t, t 0, ψ) is a solution of (8) with ||ψ|| < δ, then z(t) = (Qz)(t) as defined in (9). We claim that |z(t)| < ε for all t ≥ σ. It is clear that |z(t)| < ε on [m(σ), σ]. If there exists t 0 > σ such that |z(t 0)| = ε and |z(s)| < ε for m(σ) ≤ s < t 0, then it follows from (9) that
which contradicts that |z(t 0)| = ε. Then, |z(t)| < ε for all t ≥ σ, and the zero solution of (8) is stable.
Thus, the zero solution of (8) is asymptotically stable, and hence the zero solution of (1) is asymptotically stable. The proof is complete. □
Remark 2. Let p(t) ≡ 1, then Theorem 3.1 is Theorem B on sufficient conditions.
Theorem 3.2. Let τ (t) be twice differentiable and τ' (t) ≠ 1 for all t ∈ [m (σ), ∞). Suppose that (i)-(iii) in Theorem 3.1 hold. If there exist λ(t) as defined in Definition 2.2 and constant γ > 0 such that , then the zero solution of (1) is λ-stable.
Proof. By combining Theorem 3.1 and , we show that the zero solution of (1) is λ-stable. □
Similar to Theorems 3.1 and 3.2, we consider the stability of the generalized linear neutral equations with variable delays. The proof is omitted for similarity.
Theorem 3.3. Let τ j (t) be twice differentiable and for all t∈ [m j (σ), ∞). Suppose that

Remark 3. Similar to argument in[20]. The method in this article can be extended to the following nonlinear neutral differential equations with variable delays:
where g is supposed to be a locally Lipschitz such that |g(x) - g(y)| < |x - y| whenever |x|, |y| ≤ L for some L > 0 and g(0) = 0.
4 Examples
Example 1. Consider the neutral differential equation with variable delays
for t ≥ 0, where c(t) = sin2(t),, b(t) satisfies with and p(t) = 1 + sin 2(t). Then the zero solution of (10) is asymptotically stable.
Proof. By choosing and p(t) = 1 + sin 2(t) in Theorem 3.1, we have

Therefore, α = 0.536 + 0.05 + 0.2 + 0.05 = 0.836 < 1. Moreover, 1 ≤ p (t) ≤ 2 and all the conditions of Theorem 3.1 hold. So, the zero solution of (10) is asymptotically stable by Theorem 3.1. □
Remark 4. Consider equation with a, b, c defined as in Example 1. Then
This implies that contraction conditions (3), (4), and (5) do not hold. Thus, Theorems A, B, and C all cannot be applied to Equation 10.
Example 2. Consider the neutral differential equation with variable delays
for t ≥ 0, where c (t) = 0.2, τ (t) = 0.1t, Then the zero solution of (11) is asymptotically stable and also polynomially stable.
Proof. By choosing and in Theorem 3.3 with N = 1, M = 1 and b 1 (t) ≡ 0, we have

Therefore, α = 0.25 + 0.14 + 0.14 + 0.25 = 0.78 < 1. (i)-(iii) in Theorem 3.3 hold. So, the zero solution of (11) is asymptotically stable by (1) of Theorem 3.3. Moreover, and hence the zero solution of (11) is polynomially stable by (2) of Theorem 3.3 with λ(t) = 1 + t. □
5 Conclusion
In this article, we study a class of the linear neutral differential equation with variable delays, several special cases of which have been studied in [2, 17–19]. Some of the results, like Theorems A, B, and C, mainly dependent on the constraint . But in many environments, the constraint is not satisfied. So, by employing an auxiliary function p(t) on the contraction condition, we get new criteria for asymptotic stability of the zero solution by using the fixed point method and the differential inequality techniques which not only includes the results on sufficient part in [17–19], but also includes several equations that previously known related results can not be applied to. Another application of the method in this article is to obtain the decay rates of the solutions including exponential stability, polynomial stability, logarithmical stability, etc., in which only the exponential stability has been discussed by Luo [13, 14] and Zhou and Zhong [15] with the fixed points method. As the linear neutral differential equations like (2) and it's special cases are considered, the results of this article are new and they extend and improve previously known results.
